Our aim of this degree project in social work in multicultural environment is to get insight into the crucial circumstances effecting women who define their sexuality as something other than heterosexual and living in Mumbai, India. We traveled to Mumbai with the purpose of doing a field study consisting of nine interviews with individuals from different backgrounds who all have insight and experience in the chosen field. From an intersectional and poststructuralist perspective we are attempting to discuss the power relations and structures that these women encounter in their everyday lives. The “heterosexual matrix” is intended to describe how heterosexuality is maintained and seen as the "normal sexuality". In order for heterosexuality to function as a norm it requires that one looks at sexual minorities as deviant. Women are expected to have no sexual desire in the current discourse and by defining themselves as something other than heterosexual they differ from one of the most basic norms of society. In our interviews the focus has been the difficulties and opportunities experienced by our informants. What experience do women who differ from the heterosexual norm have and what does this induce?
