Abstract

Victims of crime in the legal process – Does foreign background matter? This study investigates if the legal process is affected by the foreign background of crime victims based upon two empirical studies: one document study of police reports concerning assault and unlawful threat in Landskrona in 2005, and one interview study focusing on the crime victim’s encounter with the police during interrogation. The analysis relates to three different theoretical areas; victimology, the study of professions and studies in ethnicity. The result demonstrates that the foreign background of crime victims does seem to influence the legal process in several ways, for example investigators try to adjust interrogations to overcome communication difficulties.
