| Flexible Studies of English - A Case Study of Students' and Teachers'... |
|
| Bengtsson, Mathilda; Rehn, Emma : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2005) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This dissertation is a case study of the English workshops at an adult education school. Our purpose is to provide an understanding of how students and teachers perceive flexible learning and how the study form relates to the steering documents and current theory on how languages are learned. The empirical study consists of observations and interviews with two teachers and five students. Our findings show that the students and teachers are generally content with the study form. Students specifically appreciate the opportunity to plan their own time, although it involves taking a great deal of responsibility. They do not miss the social aspects of having a class, but the teacher´s attention is important. The teachers perceive the study form to be beneficial for some students and though they see a clash between facilitating interaction and individualization, they find the workshop to be a good complement to regular classroom courses. |

| An Explorative Study of English Learning in Second Language Classrooms |
|
| Regenhardt, Bessie; Wall, Lina : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2006) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This study looks at how pupils perceive and their learning of the English language, juxtaposed to what the teachers believe about the pupils’ learning. Sometimes, it is taken for granted that the methods and the way a teacher goes about teaching pupils is the best way to go about a lesson. However, research shows that pupils tend to have a learning style preference which means that a method that works for one pupil is not necessarily the one that works for other pupils. The focus in this study is on how pupils feel about their learning and their learning environments as they give suggestions on improvements they wish to make. The teachers also discuss means they believe work best for their pupils and what they think their pupils feel about their learning environments. The study is an explorative one and was carried out through the use of questionnaires with open-ended questions. The questionnaires were distributed to pupils and their teachers in three English classes at one upper secondary school. In conclusion, it is discussed that for any learning to take place, there has to be a mutual understanding of the learning process. This study brings to light that pupils have learning preferences, therefore teachers have to be aware of these in order to facilitate the learning process. |

| Teaching English in Mixed-ability Classrooms. Some teachers' thoughts... |
|
| Montes Reyes, Paula; Rodríguez Formoso, Jesús : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2006) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | Our aim was to investigate teachers’ perceptions on how they meet pupils’ needs in a mixed-ability context. Through semi-structured interviews, we listened to experienced teachers and analyzed their different ways of approaching mixed-ability classrooms. We interviewed three teachers of English from a secondary school and four from an upper secondary school. Our findings show that varied instruction is the best way to meet all pupils’ needs and that it is necessary to have extra materials for both advanced and less able students. Our interviewees also highlighted the importance of continuous assessment and the need to individualize as much as possible. There is a variety of strategies that can be put into practice in order to meet all pupils’ needs, but unfortunately, no “magic method” guarantees every pupil’s development and success with regard to learning. |

| Language Minority Students |
|
| Johansson, Sofie : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2006) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | In order to find out what support there is for ELL students, students with a first language other than English in mainstream classrooms in the US, I have interviewed five teachers in Atlanta. I was interested in seeing how much these teachers know of the special needs these students have. The five teachers interviewed knew basic idea of how to instruct ELL students in their mainstream classroom but no one had been taught anything about second language acquisition or theories about the needs of ELL students in their education. This study also indicates that other languages than English are not of importance in the schools in Atlanta and teachers are not taught how to deal with ELL students. This is surprising since predictions say that in 2020 twenty five percent of students in the US will speak a first language others than English. |
| Successful Pupils' Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivational Factors for L... |
|
| Bergdahl, Åsa; Thörn, Angelica : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2006) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | The purpose of this study was to investigate what motivates six successful pupils at upper secondary school to want to learn English as a second language in a classroom situation. This was done by looking at extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors. The method used within this thesis is qualitative and we performed individual semi-structured interviews. The results of this study indicate that, unfortunately, in an educational ambience extrinsic motivational factors are dominant. The most interesting finding of this study is the strong connection between successful pupils and having goals that go beyond achieving high grades. This implies that if we as teachers can get our pupils to look beyond the grades and also get them to see the need that they have for knowing English, we can get our pupils to be more successful. |

| National Tests- Teachers' Perceptions of the National Test in English |
|
| Andersson, Sara; Johansson, Linda : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2006) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate how teachers perceive and work with the national tests in order to help students meet the goals of the course. Furthermore, due to our future careers as teachers, we want to gain more insight into the role national tests play in English. This is a qualitative study based on formal in-depth interviews that can provide a good understanding of the subject and of the informants’ views. As the teachers at secondary school work with national tests yearly they were best suited as interviewees in this investigation. Four interviews were carried out with teachers and they lasted approximately 40 minutes each. The interviews touched on a variety of questions ranging from how the teachers work with the national test and how they look upon the test, to how the purposes stipulated by Skolverket regarding the national test are fulfilled. The outcome of the interviews is that the national test in general facilitates more than complicates teachers’ work. The test serves as a good support when assessing and grading the students since it can confirm the teachers’ assessment of the students’ capability. However, this study also shows that the preparation methods used before the national test benefit weaker learners more than stronger ones. |

| The Controversial "Language Choice English" |
|
| Andersson, Malena : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2006) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This dissertation deals with what in Swedish schools is called ”Språkval Engelska”. It will be refered to as Language Choice English in the ongoing text. My interest was aroused after having experienced this controversial subject as a student teacher. I found that different schools work with the subject in different ways. There is no clear syllabus for the subject since the grading is a part of the ordinary English grade. Language Choice English is an option for those who do not want to choose French, German or Spanish as Language Choice. The idea is that the subject is meant for those who cannot cope with yet another language and who need extra support in English. This study shows that not only the so-called weak pupils choose to study Language Choice English. There has been a mismanagement of the subject since so many pupils who are good at English choose it out of convenience and for tactical reasons. The idea of only letting those pupils, who actually need more support choose it, has been lost. Four different secondary schools have been investigated concerning how Language Choice English is organized. I learned that all of these schools have different organizations. The method I used was formal interviews with six different teachers at four different schools. The results of the interviews show that at some schools the subject works well. At other schools it does not. The reasons for this seem to be many. Reasons such as low status of the subject, large and heterogeneous groups and pupils and teachers who are unmotivated can be mentioned. |

| School Codes and School Cultures |
|
| Oskarsson, Mattias : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2006) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This study explores the complexity of the cultures and codes teachers become a part of at their schools. I present two teachers working on two very different schools to display how they perceive school cultures and school codes in their respective educational settings. A school’s code or culture is a result of a complex interplay between factors such as teacher background, school traditions, colleagues, students and the characteristics of the school’s area. To become aware of this process of socialisation is highly relevant for any teacher or teacher student since it has a direct impact on a teacher’s work. This study displays two cases of perceived school cultures and school codes and links them to theories within this specific research field. |

| Adolescents' Perceptions of English Outside of School - A Study of Fo... |
|
| Lundgren, Caroline : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2006) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This study investigates adolescents’ perceptions and thoughts on English outside of school. Adolescents come in contact with English everywhere these days and English has become more of a second language than a foreign language in today’s society. The purpose of this study is to get a deeper understanding of what young people think about the English they meet in their spare time. Four young people who are all ninth-graders were interviewed for the study. They were asked questions about where they meet English in their spare time, how they use the language and how they learn English outside of school. Their responses show that adolescents come in contact with English through different sources, they use the language according to their interests and they all go about learning English in different ways. |

| English Textbook Evaluation. An Investigation into Criteria for Selec... |
|
| Fredriksson, Cecilia; Olsson, Rebecca : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2006) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This dissertation is a qualitative research study on the criteria for selecting English textbooks. Our research is based on interviews with four teachers at an upper secondary school. The informants stated that one reason for not conducting a more thorough evaluation was that they found it too time-consuming. Another reason was that materials evaluation was an unknown concept to them. The results of our investigation illustrate that the school’s evaluation procedure has improved over the years. However, the teachers at the school would benefit from developing their evaluation strategy. The most important criterion to consider in the selection is, according to the teachers, interesting and relevant texts that the students can relate to. |

| Issues of Students' Absence |
|
| Lundblad, Ida : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2006) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | All teachers will inevitably be confronted with issues related to students’ absence. This study sets out to investigate how language teachers’ daily work is affected when students are absent. Four language teachers at an upper secondary school were interviewed about their experiences of and their views on students’ non-attendance. They were also asked to describe how they handle absence as a part of their daily routines. All the informants thought that absence is a serious problem. Form teachers’ workload is especially affected if their class has many students with high absence. Their strategies for handling absence were based on their aim to keep their workload down and to obtain fairness and equivalence. |

| The Representation of Gender and Gender Roles in English Textbooks |
|
| Holmqvist, Petra; Gjörup, Liselotte : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2007) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This dissertation investigates the representation of gender and gender roles in English textbooks. The aim is to see how women and men are described and to what extent the textbooks show equality between the sexes. The study comprises the examination of six textbooks, two of which were published in the 1970s. Previous research concerning gender issues and textbooks is integrated to give a clearer picture of our investigation. The results show that there is an imbalance in the number of female protagonists, an over-representation of male authors and that occupations for female characters are mainly stereotypical or non-existent. This dissertation will show that the textbooks selected do not live up to the requirements in the policy documents. Finally, the dissertation contains some practical ideas on how to work with gender issues in the classroom. |

| ‘Marks’ or ‘grades’? – an investigation concerning attitudes towards ... |

| Sjöstedt, Jimmy; Vranic, Monika : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2007) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | English is today a vast world language, and the foremost important business and cross-border language in the world. The two predominant English varieties in the Swedish educational system are British English and American English. A third variety, Mid-Atlantic English, is however on the up-rise, and many researchers expect this to be the future educational standard variety due to escalating globalization. British English is the variety which traditionally has been taught in the Swedish school, but the last couple of decades American English have been gaining ground because of popular media. Today both varieties are referred to in the Swedish National Curriculum, and teachers as well as students face a multifaceted choice. The aim of this paper is to investigate attitudes among upper-secondary level teachers and students; on what grounds they have chosen their personal variety and to what extent they are aware of what English variety they use. What we have seen is that resolute attitudes can be perceived towards the two Englishes. Furthermore, our investigation shows that students mix British and American English, and even though British English still is held in academic esteem, American English characteristics predominate in the mix. British English is recurrently described as “snobbish” and in a more positive fashion as “high-class”, whereas American English is perceived either as “youthful and cool” or “dim and uneducated”. Even students who prefer and think they use British English, to a large extent use American orthography and spelling. |

| The Attitudes Towards the English Language in Relation to Achievement... |
|
| Nissen, Sandra; Strukelj, Alexander : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2007) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This dissertation aims to study students at a multicultural school and their attitudes towards English, both as a school subject and as a language. Furthermore, the study investigates the relation between the students’ achievements in the subject and their attitudes. An interview study was performed with year nine students at a multicultural school. Thirteen interviews were conducted; twelve with students and one with the English teacher, which all concentrated on the relation between the students’ background and their attitudes towards the English language and English as a school subject, as well as their achievements in the subject. The results show that immigrant students do not manage to reach the aims and criterion posed in the syllabus for English to the same extent as native students. Even so, their attitude towards the language and the school subject is not affected. The study shows that immigrant students are as positive towards English as native students. |

| Interpretation and Grading in the Current Grading System |
|
| Nilsson, Anna-Maria; Björk, Malin : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2007) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This dissertation deals with the goal- and criterion-referenced grading system in use in Swedish schools today. We have chosen to investigate how teachers perceive the current grading system and what challenges they are faced with when grading in the English subject. The interest for this topic was deepened during our final in-school-practices after which we discussed the issue with each other and came to the conclusion that the grading system would be useful to delve into in order to feel more secure when leaving the teacher training college. The current grading system is debated in schools on a daily basis since it is a tool for teachers to work with. Although the teachers give the impression of still having difficulties with the current grading system, the results show that the majority of the interviewees have grasped the system. It rather seems as if the difficulty is how to interpret different policy documents due to the fact that the goals and the criteria are of a general nature at times. A general opinion among most of the teachers is that they do not have difficulties with the grading itself in the current grading system. But they do, however, request further grading steps in order to be better able to explain where the students are on the grading scale. Moreover, we concluded that the teachers believe the system to benefit the students as well as themselves. Also, that it is necessary to continuously have discussions concerning the current grading system so as to better understand what it entails. |

| Pupils' Attitudes Towards Groupwork in a School Setting |
|
| Mårtensson, Jonas; Svenning, Katarina : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2007) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | Group work is a teaching method used frequently in Swedish upper secondary schools. In this thesis the authors examine four pupils’ attitudes towards group work. The aim is to enhance understanding of how teachers can improve pupils’ learning abilities when they co-operate using this methodology. Qualitative interviews were conducted to examine the informants’ past experience of group work, how they perceive it functions currently, and why they believe it is used in the school setting. When the interviewees discussed groups in which all group members were motivated, they all were in favor of group work as teaching method. However, they experience that few guidelines are provided on how to conduct well functioning group work and that teachers seldom motivate its use. The authors suggest that teachers should provide more scaffolding on how to work in groups and describe the ideas and advantages prior to group work. |
| The Depiction of a Troubled School, a Study of Unbalanced Media |
|
| Lundberg, André : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2007) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | The purpose of my dissertation is to study an example of a depiction in local media of a troubled school. The dissertation examines the newspaper Sydsvenskan and its reports on the case that developed from the events taking place around the Gustav Adolf’s school in Landskrona. The starting points for the media coverage began on the 18th of January 2007 when the school was closed down. This paper follows Sydsvenskans reporting from that day and the following fourteen days, until the 1st of February. The dissertation focuses on problems such as bias and generalizations that arise in the media or more specifically in Sydsvenskan during this event. The purpose of the dissertation is to examine how a single turbulent event was portrayed in a large local newspaper and to see if the coverage was balanced. A variety of newspaper texts, ranging from articles, editorials and letters to the editor are examined using critical discourse analysis, as developed by linguists Norman Fairclough and Teun van Dijk. The method attempts to draw lines between the use of language and the exercise of power. My results were divided in two sections, one on racism and one on political bias. Connecting the material to theories on hidden racism as described by van Dijk and the Swedish sociologist Birgitta Löwander, I did not find the reports racist or stereotypical, in fact there are very few references to ethnic divisions in the material. However, there is a clear political bias regarding who is represented in the paper. Politicians from Folkpartiet get more space in the reports than their political counterparts, They are featured in more than half of the articles. The political bias is not otherwise present in the content, and what is being said is more nuanced than who is actually saying it. |
| English and Swedish in Sweden - Swedish pupils’ attitudes towards th... |
|
| Gustav, Dahlin : Malmö högskola/Lärarutbildningen (2007) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | The English language holds a powerful role world-wide and is now used in some domains in Sweden. This has caused concern for the future of the Swedish language and whether or nor diglossia is underway. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate if there are differences in the attitudes towards the increasing use of English in Swedish society between two different populations of upper-secondary school students: a) students who attend the International Baccalaureate Programme (whose medium of instruction is English), and b) students who attend the Social Science Programme (whose medium of instruction is Swedish). The study investigates students’ pattern and language use and attitudes through the use of questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and reflective journals. The results show that the IB pupils are somewhat less positively disposed towards the increased influence of the English language in Swedish society and argue that it might pose a threat to the status of the Swedish language. However, the investigation also discloses that most IB pupils, to a much larger extent than the SP pupils, consider English paramount in order to succeed in today’s society. Furthermore, the results indicate that the IB pupils’ attitudes towards the expansion of the English language in Swedish society largely correspond to the main objective of Mål i mun, i.e. to protect the Swedish language as well as promote the English language.
