A Fast Parallel Algorithm for Minimum-Cost Small Integral Flows

English abstract:

We present a new approach to the minimum-cost integral flow problem for small values of the flow. It reduces the problem to the tests of simple multi-variable polynomials over a finite field of characteristic two for non-identity with zero. In effect, we show that a minimum-cost flow of value k in a network with n vertices, a sink and a source, integral edge capacities and positive integral edge costs polynomially bounded in n can be found by a randomized PRAM, with errors of exponentially small probability in n, running in O(klog(kn) + log2 (kn)) time and using 2 k (kn) O(1) processors. Thus, in particular, for the minimum-cost flow of value O(logn), we obtain an RNC 2 algorithm.

An Evolutionary View of Collective Intelligence

English abstract:

Based on the question “How can people and computers be connected so that – collectively – they act more intelligently than any individuals, groups, or computers have ever done before?” we propose an evolutionary approach. From this point of view, there are of course fundamental differences between man and machine. Where one is artificial, the other is natural, and where the computer needs to process, the brain must adapt. We propose the use of culturally inherited units, i.e., memes, for describing collective knowledge storage. Like the genes, memes have the ability to be inherited to the next generation. Genes appear independently of our society while memes are a result of our cultural development. The concept of collective intelligence may involve a new kind of meme, entirely emerging within the intersection between man and machine, i.e., outside the scope of human control. The challenge is to model this behavior without overriding constraints within basic evolutionary vs. machine settings.

Exploring new ways of interaction with smartphones

English abstract:

Current interaction options with smartphones are limited. In this paper, we present four experiments that we conducted and our initial findings. Our experimenting process was analyzed together with Dourish’s work on tangible and embodied interaction and we gained insights to better understand the meaning behind smartphone interactions. This sets a foundation for discovering new ways to interact with smartphones in the future such as touch-less, eyes free or haptic interaction.

English abstract:

In this paper, we describe a novel model for locating appropriate ‘helpers’ for users based on the Chain of Friends (CoF) personal relationship in a SNS system, in order to locate appropriate ‘helpers’ for different users. This model is called SESNMM (Search Engine for Social Networked Mobile Model) and allows individual users, located in remote locations, to participate in a collaborative online community, via our SESNMM-based system. Such typical helpers are willing to help other users solve their tasks/problems and it is intended that both the users and helpers gain knowledge from these interactive online sessions. We have applied this model for inviting PC members of an international conference – namely LTLE 2012. The results showed that our model is very effective for discovering collaboration partners, locating useful helpers, finding users with similar interests in order to create communities for providing future and longer-term helping and teaching exchange.

English abstract:

This talk describes the nucleation, growth and coarsening of γ′′ precipitates in Inconel 718 (IN718) during heat treatments. The model can be used in thermo-mechanical simulations of repair welding followed by heat treatment to predict residual stresses and final microstructure in aeroengine components. The interactions between precipitates and dislocations are included in a dislocation density based material model.
