| 1990-talets svenska attityder till invandrare och invandring |
|
| Laczak, Krystof : Malmö högskola/IMER (1999) |
1-year master STUDENT ESSAY |
Opinionsundersökningar genomförda i Sverige under 1990-talet utgör analysens bas. |

bachelor STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This is a study about the employment office’s activity with dialogues in labour market integration for newly arrived prior to the Lag om etableringsinsatser för vissa nyanlända invandrare which comes into force the first of December 2010. The purpose was to give a background to the new law and to study the organisation around the employment office’s activity in Malmö. This was accomplished trough a literature study and interviews with people central for the activity at the employment office in Malmö. Theories about implementation; top-down and bottom-up and also new institutionalism were used for analysis. The activity can be seen as a work that is carried out to secure a good implementation of the future law. From the interviews it became clear that the implementation phase is not an easy or uncomplicated process in an authority. Organizational fields, which makes a part of new institutionalism, make an interesting thought in combination with the activity but to be able to determine whether or not an organizational field will be made around the establishment of new arrivals further research is needed. |

bachelor STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This study is concerned with the region of Öresund and the aspects of work commuting in particular. The purpose is to investigate attitudes and opinions towards the region among work commuters and then apply them to various theories relevant for the questioning, such as globalization, regionalization, ethnicity, nationalism, culture and identity. To investigate the attitudes towards the region we have done a number of interviews with commuters, using qualitative and semi-structured questions. The analysis is divided into three different parts; In Body and in Mind, Us and Them, the Future; and consists of a discussion of our informants’ answers related to the theoretical aspects of the earlier mentioned theories. Our results show that our informants feel a geographical connection to the region but that more common cultural references are needed to be able to speak of a mental connection within the region of Öresund. |

| Moraeus, Lisa; Klæboe, Kjerstin : Malmö högskola/IMER (2006) |
bachelor STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | The essay is a discourse analysis of the term diversity (mångfald) in policy documents of companies and authorities, using Michel Foucault's concept of governmentality. The formation of subjects within a certain discourse, as Michel Foucault understands it, is a key to understanding the discourse of diversity in our time. The essay will show evidence of the discourse of diversity as part of the all-inclusive discourse of governmentality. |

| A Study on the Implementation and Effect of the Common European Asylu... |
|
| Richt, Victoria : Malmö högskola/IMER (2006) |
1-year master STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | The aim of this study is to investigate the development of the Common European Asylum System which was called for at the Tampere European Council in 1999. The intention was to harmonize the legal standards of asylum seekers and refugees and coordinating the policies Thus, with this study I want to give an account as to what has happened so far and what effect this might have had on asylum seekers in the Member States of the European Union. This is done through an interdisciplinary approach by looking at the developments in the legal section as to what laws have been passed and implemented so far but also with a questionnaire sent to organizations working in connection to European Council for Refugees and Exiles aiming to understand their perception of the harmonization process. Further, I present statistics and diagrams taken from statistic publications of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in order to illustrate patterns in the history of migration as to trends and patterns. The main idea of the harmonization process is that all Member States should treat asylum applications in a similar way. However at present there still seems to be major differences in the numbers of applications, the recognition rates and what status granted between the Member States of the European Union. The Dublin Regulation is perceived as an unjust tool against the asylum seekers since states have differences in the recognition and statuses. The Member States of the European Union still have a very long way to go in this harmonization process to claim equal treatment of asylum seekers. |

bachelor STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | The aim of the essay is to study three good men’s and the Chief Guardian’s roles in relation to the rights and the needs of asylum seeking children without custodians. A focus is also on the relation between them. On the basis of laws and guidelines their relation to three child perspectives is described. The qualitative study is based on interviews with representatives from the Chief Guardian and three of the seven good men in Malmö municipality. The interviews are analysed on the basis of the perspectives and three concepts. It is pointed out that the good men work on the basis of the adult perspective and the society’s perspective. They also mean that the best interests of the child can be met when considering the child’s perspective. Their role as good man means according to themselves that they shall work in a parent’s position through guiding, safety and to solve problem that can occur. The Chief Guardian works on the basis on the society’s perspective. That is the best interests of the child according to the law. To sum up, the study points out the need for more knowledge about asylum seeking children without custodians both among the good men and among different authorities. |
| Biometrics: A New Mean of Surveillance and Migration Control |
|
| Kajevic, Belhira : Malmö högskola/IMER (2006) |
1-year master STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | We live in an era of advanced technological innovations and it is therefore difficult to acquire a proper overview of the different surveillance techniques deployed for the purpose of enhancing and administrating migration control. The intent of this paper is to disseminate one of the new technologies on the market: the biometric technology that is an identification and verification system based on measurements of biological traits. Different approaches are used to explore and investigate the technological functions, social structures and political justifications for their validity and their role in the implementation of the biometric technology. The paper also provides an overview of the different areas of political and social management that are affected by the implementation of the biometric techniques. The principal aim of this work is to examine how the implementation of the biometric techniques will affect privacy for all people, taking both information privacy and personal integrity into consideration. The second question deals with migration management, as the current implementation mainly involves travel documents. It focuses on the consequences of the so-called war on terror and its call for prevention of terrorism and irregular migration. The dilemma between national security and the right to privacy, public good and private interests, and the realms of state and individual rights are also discussed and analysed. Hence, the framework and the fundamental structure of this thesis are based on three core issues pertinent to the implementation of biometrics in the EU: threats posed on the right to privacy, securitization of migration, and intensification of surveillance and state control. The findings are used to identify the threats posed on right to privacy and the way this right is compromised, and the consequences of practices and policies in the field of migration that are discriminatory and exclusory. Lastly, by employing different theories, this paper examines why state seeks technological control over citizens and why individuals comply with state control and surveillance. |

| English abstract: | Child labour have become an increasing phenomena in Ghana, whereby especially young girls are employed to domestic work or vendor in the market instead of going to school. In Dzemeni Volta Ghana, the case is much worsens as majority of the children do not attend school but rather vendor in the market. Not that alone some of these children are traffic from the neighbour towns to Dzemeni to come and work. Dzemeni is a small town located in south of Ghana precisely the Volta region, it has a long history of serving as the market centre for the adjoining neighbouring towns and it a very busy on it market days which is every Thursday of the week. The problem of child labour here has a long history which is rooted in the ideological thinking of training for people. To them training is not necessary education in the classroom but through the means available to them to make a child become useful in the future. Moreover, their culture permits them to send their children to live with extended family members to learn trade or something. However, the various daily livelihoods of children plus the general problem which help expand child labour within the community forms the main body of this paper. This paper therefore presents and summarizes the various conditions in which these children find themselves inn and also how the government policy at present in one way or the other help contribute to the continuation of child labour unknowingly plus the view of the children who are victims. |

| English abstract: | This paper basically tries to seek if there are any tendencies or possibilities that the power of colonizer still remains in the colonized country in terms of migration policy regarding migrant worker rights. In this paper, the author focuses on the policy of both Malaysia and the United Kingdom as a host country regarding the rights of migrant as the topic of the paper. In this paper the author uses comparative analysis by comparing the migration policy of Malaysia and the United Kingdom and focuses on the migrant worker rights to see if there are any possibilities or tendencies that Malaysia adopted the migration policy of the United Kingdom. In conclusion, the United Kingdom policy regarding the system and recruitment of migrant workers in order to limit the influx of migrant workers influenced Malaysia to adopt similar policy. But Malaysia has different implementation of policy regarding migrant worker rights comparing to the United Kingdom. |

| Crimes of Honour – Females' Right for Support in the Multicultural So... |

bachelor STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This research demonstrate how crimes of honour functions and consequently could lay the path in which females do need help and support in order to escape from (or manage) their environment of oppression. Thus, females all over the world are violated in the name of honour and every year around 5,000 women and girls are murdered in the name of honour by her relatives. The exact number how many that is affected by crimes of honour could only be guessed, due to, we only see the registered crimes. Nevertheless, this phenomenon is still evident within multicultural societies as in Sweden. Hence, those females that do not want to live in oppression or expose themselves to violence and crimes such as murder, instead escape and as a result necessitate protection and societal aid. The legal and practical support targeting these victims must therefore be known. The aim with this research is to highlight this support in an empirical research. In addition, various theoretical and legal perspectives explain a broader understanding of the phenomenon of crimes of honour; in which relevant regulations of the Swedish jurisdiction and the Human Rights are dispositional. The empirical research takes departure from semi-structured interviews with eight local agents in the city of Malmö (Sweden), and also, an interview with a woman affected by crimes of honour was conducted in order to highlight strengths and weaknesses of the local support. The result demonstrates that both the legal and practical support has its affirmative elements; however this support is also limited. For instance, victims of honour crimes lack information how to access this support. Moreover, the Swedish Penal Code do not have any uttered criminal classification about this sorts of violence, leading to the lack of registration unless not considered being a crime according to the Swedish Penal Code. Since crimes of honour affects many people’s lives and exists in many different shapes, conducts and societies it is required that the right kind of support is carried out; whereas the importance of local agents taking responsibility must be acknowledged. |

2-year master STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | Some Asian countries such as Malaysia and Singapore have been experiencing economic growth which, in its turn have been stimulating migrant workers, mainly un-skilled, to migrate into those countries. The present paper tries to examine the human rights violations of domestic workers in Malaysia and Singapore which are occurring in the form of modern servitude or servitude. Moreover, the paper also tries to elaborate the working conditions of foreign domestic workers in Malaysia and Singapore. The present paper is using human rights coupled with intersectionality theories in order to examine whether enacted migration policies in Malaysia and Singapore in relation to migrant workers, though migration policies imposed to domestic workers are aimed to fulfill the national interests, can be regarded as a form of modern slavery or servitude . The present thesis is a case study which is examined by elaborating numerous literatures regarding the working conditions of foreign domestic workers in Malaysia and Singapore. The factual conditions of domestic workers in Malaysia and Singapore, namely the conditions and policies concerning the limitation of several rights of domestic workers will be described and analyzed under the human rights coupled with intersectionality perspectives. |

| English abstract: | To determine whether selective immigration policies are influenced by national experience and economic concerns, this research studies Denmark’s The Greencard scheme, and seeks to find the answer if the formulation of the conditions to be qualified will attract or repel the aspiring immigrant. Reasons such as immigration patterns, integration issues, and increasing pressure to the society contributes to the tendency and positive overall impression suggesting repulsive formulation. The content analysis of the research material amicably identified the object of signification and Western values in the definition of parameter to qualify. Although the reduced data showed the application of systematic distinctions in the process of differentiation, the subsequent analysis of the results inferred the intention of the country that is mutually beneficial. That, the basis of evaluation using a point system is designed to assess the likelihood that the immigrant will be able to find qualified work in Denmark. The result of this study revealed an interesting starting point in conducting further research. It will help the researcher to step forward in incorporating either opinion survey or interviews in order to generate an even better strength of results and a more generalized conclusion. |

| English abstract: | Following changes in patterns of international migration, Swedish migration policy has witnessed a discursive shift from an attitude of multiculturalism to a focus on individual and civic integration. However problems of ethnic segregation and socio-economic exclusion of immigrants remain a serious challenge, especially in metropolitan areas. This research aims to shed light on how different configurations of social capital impact civic interactions and trust between young immigrants and Swedish residents, thus contributing towards, or hindering, a successful achievement of the goal of integration. Semi-structured interviews with students from an ethnically mixed school in Malmö were employed to gain primary data on social interactions between the two groups. In order to take into account other factors that can influence the youths' attitudes and action (such as the parents' social structure), the research also provides insights into three municipal projects aimed at increasing integration. The findings point towards the existence of distinct and separate social networks among the students, based on characteristics that can be attributes of social exclusion on the first place. Thus resulting in a perception of ‘difference’ regarding certain immigrant groups. On the other hand while all the three projects seem to result in positive outcomes of social structures by diffusion of information, at the same time it still seems that the most segregated do not benefit from them. These results provide the basis for a better understanding of potential ways of increasing trust and mutual understanding amongst the city residents. |

| Dubstep - A journey in to dark sounds, urban spaces and contemporary ... |
|
| Frölich, Emilia : Malmö högskola/Kultur och samhälle (2009) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This paper concerns processes of youth identification and formation of lifestyles in relation to the recent British music genre 'dubstep'. The music style is viewed as a modern youth leisure practice which construct social meaning and belonging in an urban translocal environment. The research, based on analytical data and qualitative interviewing, has proven that modern youth lifestyles can not be analysed through the theoretical scope of subcultures, as these tend to be homogeneous and out dated. Therefore, a postmodern approach has opened up to possibilities to understand youth identification as fragmented and interrupted processes, influenced by a hybrid of transnational cultural meanings and spaces. The paper also discusses the role of media and the growth of consumerism in relation to youth identifications, and it suggests that the dubstep scene can be viewed as a respond to, and sometimes a borrowing of, the representation of the modern urban youth which can be found in newspapers, as well as fashion and music magazines. Furthermore, several postmodern youth studies has celebrated the rejection of old unequal categories of gender and class when analysing the way contemporary youth socialise and create belonging. However, my study questions this notion and claim that structural power relations still exist and to a certain extend determine lifestyles, behaviour and motivation among different youth. |

| Economic Integration - A Comparative Study on the Somali and the form... |
|
| Selvi, Maria : Malmö högskola/IMER (2006) | STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This study focuses on economic integration of foreign-born men and women from Somalia and the former Yugoslavia in Sweden and in the Netherlands. Many welfare states of Western Europe are experiencing that some groups of immigrants have had a hard time to integrating economically. This has been dictated by high unemployment rates and low incomes. The aim of this thesis is therefore to describe the migration and the economic integration for the chosen groups and countries and to analyse factors that can have an effect on the immigrants’ labour market situation. Thesis also investigates institutional factors that can contribute to either positive or negative immigrant economic integration. For the purpose of gaining a deeper understanding of the subject a comparative method is used, which is characterised by both descriptive and explanatory analysis on immigrant economic integration. The analysis is based on literature, earlier studies and statistical data. The theories used for explaining labour market integration are human capital theory, social capital theory as well as the destination countries institutional factors, specifically the immigration and integration policies. It was found that the Yugoslavian immigrant groups had a positive labour market attachment when compared to the Somali immigrant groups. The Dutch former Yugoslavs have the best labour market success. Out of the examined Somalis; the Swedish Somalis had the best labour market success while the Dutch Somalis have shown the poorest labour market attachment. It was also found that, especially, the relation between the degrees of education has an effect on the immigrants’ economic integration. Furthermore, year of migration and age have also shown to have an effect on the investigated immigrants’ economic integration. The examined institutional factors, on the other hand, were not believed to have any direct impact on the immigrants’ labour market success. |

| English abstract: | This thesis deals with the recent adoption of the Sudanese curriculum at ‘refugee schools’ in Cairo, Egypt. It is based on material collected through qualitative research methods during two field studies. The aim of this paper is to describe how and why the Sudanese curriculum was introduced in Egypt, to outline refugees’ opinions about the curriculum and its adoption, and to analyze the role it plays in view of the overall context of this urban environment. In the theoretical framework, this thesis presents concepts regarding the phenomenon of ‘waiting’. The paper gives an overview of the specifics that refugees are confronted with in urban settings, and highlights the importance of education. Moreover, the thesis presents background information about refugees living in Egypt and their access to rights, and points out the obstacles they face regarding public education. The results of this study show that the new curriculum is valued by students, teachers, and parents, as it offers the opportunity to acquire official school documents that are required to enter university. A number of aspects that refugees criticize about the Sudanese curriculum, such as its contents, are also brought up. This thesis concludes that the Sudanese curriculum plays a significant role for refugees in Egypt, as it gives students perspectives for the future and thus has a positive effect on their experience of waiting. |
