    Abstract [en]

Summary This paper deals with children's thoughts after reading a fiction book with a historical document. I have chosen to interview five children ten years old who attend different schools in a medium-sized city. My purpose is to find out what skills children acquire through reading fiction? My main question is: • What do the children that learn by reading fiction? Subqueries: • What do the children affects their interest in a book? • How can a book of historical action to increase interest in the subject of history? To get answers to my questions I have used qualitative interviews with a narrative approach. This means a tradition of research that is based on stories. I have chosen to do an analysis of the narratives, which means that I have read children's stories and experiences of reading. This information, I then treated as data, and then I have created stories, which were then analyzed. In my analysis, I came up with four different themes in my stories: interest, empathy, parallels and insights and learning. The analysis provides examples of commonalities and differences in children related to the different themes. My results show that children's interest in a book is partly affected by the book cover and information text on the back cover. Some children also mentioned that they choose to read the sequel to the books as part of a series, because they "know" that the books tend to be good. The children give examples of what they learn from reading. In addition to new words as they tell, among other things, that they learn to understand other people, they learn practical things in such an interest and a child mentions that you are aware of how well you yourself have it. When asked about a book of historical action can increase the interest in the subject of history, so the kids think that it could affect them more curious about how people used to live. Some of the kids also think it is more fun to read "regular" books than fiction, as they believe that it happens more in the "regular" books, also will be affected in a different way. Keywords: history teaching, middle school, narrative approach, fiction
