1-year master STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | Scenskifte is a project of development by request from Ystads Teater AB. The project has during spring 2005, in cooperation with the board an the management, produced a concept for the business. Supported by the method Effektkarta, the theatre has reached a clarification of what they wish to create, why they exist, for whom and how to reach the goals. The most important target groups for Ystads Teater turned out to be: Children and youth, the loyal audience of today, the organisers, infrequent visitors and the trade and industry. Ystads Teater wshes to be a complete and splendid experience, an open meeting place, a centre and a symbol for stage art in the southeast of Skåne. To achieve this the theatre wishes to offer enriching culture, arrange unique music theatre, involve in educative, creative processes and also preserve the building and its history. The recommendation to Ystads Theatre is to found a friend association within the theatre, create a reference group of children an youth, arrange a New Year show and initiate cultural collaboration in Ystad. The theatre has the possibility to develop the summer opera into a festival and take on the producer´s role. There is also requirement for a person of similar competence to that of a museum pedagouge. As the theatre is a symbol for the brand name Ystad, it is the responsibility of the community as a whole to preserve and take care of it. |

| English abstract: | In recent decades there has been a terrific development in the attitude towards children, childhood and children’s culture. Children are no longer seen as inarticulate objects that the grown-ups by right and duty lead out of their childhood and into their adulthood in the overall framework of pedagogic and developmental methods. Children of today are seen as social actors and as independent players in their own childhood as well as in the society and culture they are a part of. In the Danish field of cultural communication “culture for, with and by children” has become an all-pervading slogan. But without communicators and scholars in the field having come to an agreement about what the slogan – and especially the concept of “culture by children” – actually covers. Using an aesthetic approach to children’s own culture Beth Juncker, children’s culture scholar, makes what she calls a “tidying-up” of the concept in her doctoral thesis, Om Processen (About the Process), and she constructs a model for what she sees as the two current paradigms of children’s culture: The normal paradigm asks the overall question: “What does art and culture do for and with children?” The new paradigm asks: “What do children themselves do with culture?” Basing my thesis on Juncker’s paradigmatic thinking and her new aesthetic approach to children’s culture it is my purpose to investigate how theory and reality go together in children’s culture today. Using the project of “Børnekulturpilot” (a children’s culture project in Copenhagen) as an example of the reality of children’s culture and interviews with the participating children I examine and discuss Juncker’s theories and paradigms and their practicability. I wish to reach a concept of practicability of “culture by children.” With this thesis I hope to participate in the debate about whether “culture by children” serves a purpose in a social and educational structure that sees innovation and creativity as indispensable resources on the future global labour market, but at the same time still focuses on children’s formal knowledge and measurable capabilities instead of on their creative abilities. |

| Hela Holma - En studie av ett grannskap |

| Lewin, Alyssa; Zetterdahl, Stina : Malmö högskola/Kultur och samhälle (2012) |
2-year master STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate the residential area Holma, Sweden, its preconditions and how it is experienced by the people that reside and work there, and to analyze and discuss this from theoretical viewpoints regarding space, place, urbanity and neighborhood. Furthermore, the aim is to identify resources for the promotion of community and sustainable improvement. The work is written from a social constructionist perspective in which one premise is that people, through their actions form meaning and that this behaviour itself is influenced by social structures. The empirical work consists of ethnographic studies that are further analyzed through the previously mentioned theoretical basis. The study culminates in discussions about the importance of civic engagement and long-term perspective in the implementation of the initiatives. A major strong point is that people should have the opportunity to identify and have influence over their place, as thorough knowledge of a place is to be found through its people. The thesis shows how the social resources that operate in the field should be better used for development of a strong neighborhood and community. |

2-year master STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This master thesis aims to identify the production processes within the contemporary creative industries, and in particular one field of culture and media production called transmedia. This thesis focuses on one particular aspect of transmedia – interactivity and participation. The questions that are investigated are: How does transmedia producers use interactivity? Does transmedia and interactivity change the production conditions for producers, and if so, how and why? The aim of this thesis is to get an understanding of the working conditions within the context of transmedia for producers and in extension for the consumers. Through this, the intention is also to create a better understanding of the role of transmedia within the contemporary creative industries. The methods used to examine this are based on qualitative research interviews with six transmedia producers and participatory observations of the documentary film project Ghost Rockets. By using a theoretical framework based on interactivity, participation, Marxist theories and Critical Theory this thesis comes to the conclusion that transmedia producers strive for interactivity but that full interactivity rarely is achieved. The use of interactivity and transmedia also leads to changing working conditions for both producers and consumers. These changes include a blurring of the roles of producers and consumers and that both producers and consumers are working for free. |

| English abstract: | Hyllie, a large scaled urban development project in the Southern of Malmö, hopes to contribute to Malmö Municipality’s goal to be the worlds greatest in sustainable development year of 2020. The city of Malmö together with 20-something developers are building at the urban development area and by now the area is full of large scaled buildings and the pile of construction permits for a new modern bathhouse and offices, cultural centers, hotels and thousands of homes are constantly increasing. Just because of all the large-scale investments in this area, I examine the cultural aspects of urban planning in Hyllie in this paper. By studying the struggle for meaning and how it is negotiated between the municipality and commercial entities through a cultural analysis tool build mostly with geographer David Harvey’s theories about a transformation in urban governance from managerialism to entrepreneurialism, I come to the conclusion that the city of Malmö is leaning towards a planning strategies where the focus is on economic growth. As the post-industrial society is highly digitalized offering constant access to information I also look at how the media reports on the creation of meaning in new Hyllie. A transformation is revealed, showing that media year after year becomes less critical and even starts to contribute to the image of Hyllie as the city of Malmö and developers want. |

| Artivism in Tunis - Music and Art as tools of creative resistance & t... |

| Korpe, Tilia : Malmö högskola/Kultur och samhälle (2013) |
2-year master STUDENT ESSAY |
| English abstract: | This Thesis explores artistic activism or artivism in the context of youth in post- revolution Tunisia. During and after the Arab Uprisings, the MENA region has experienced a tendency, wherein resistance is undertaken by artivists through in situ art interventions, music, and performances that create ‘new cultural spaces’, in which cultural hybridism through the mix of urban youth subculture, communication and traditional culture, creates new contexts of authenticity. It further investigates how art and activism is used in Tunis as a tool to mirror, provoke or communicate messages that directly or indirectly deal with post-revolution themes, and which mechanisms exist in limitations of artistic freedom of expression. It utilizes concepts of cultural resistance through theorists Stephen Duncombe and discusses the concept artivism as a hybrid term, through Aldo Milohnic. It then delineates subculture, authenticity and hybridization through various theorists and examines Artistic Freedom of Expression through the standpoint of international conventions and reports. The Thesis also analyzes artistic activism, commodification and globalization through a re-contextualization of Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin. Guiding this analysis are interrelated points of redefining Arab youth subcultures, through interviews conducted with five young Tunisian artists who combine artistic expression with political commentary and activism. I argue that a new dynamic discourse is shaped in the MENA region through the re-mixing of a cultural narrative which becomes re-contextualized locally, and therefore becomes authentic in a ‘glocal’ context. The Thesis offers analytical contribution to the field of cultural production in a Tunisian political context and adds to the research field of artistic activism. |

| English abstract: | This thesis intends to research the association by the name of Retro and its cultural productions in order to identify social movement dimensions of Retro, and the impact it can have on society today. The concept of volunteerism will be unfolded focusing on the meaning it can add to the cultural productions. Research has been made claiming that early social movements is of great importance to democracy as we know it, and social movements today strive to challenge the dominating political culture. Furthermore, some claim that volunteerism is the very foundation on which we build our welfare society. According to several social scientists, (Flacks, 1988; Marcuse, 1969; Eyerman & Jamison, 1998; Crossley, 2002) social movements can bring about change in society through the cultural actions that take place in them, more than the political actions. Throughout the thesis I argue, that the social dimension and community of Retro which the cultural productions help create, is of big importance not only to the volunteer but also to the society in general. This provides attention to a desired social behaviour where individuals think about others than themselves – a quality that is crucial for the future existence of the welfare state. |
