Our purpose with this work is to get knowledge about what environment is according to pupils and teachers and to get knowledge of how we can see environment in the education. In order to find that out we have been working with the legal framework, course plans and literature that concern environment. The study is based on a questionnaire with following interviews in two third-grade classes at two different schools; both pupils and teachers participated. The questionnaire results are presented in a table and extracts from the interviews are published in the paper. We also want to investigate how the formal framework is followed in the two schools. The results show that the pupils have a very vague perception of what environment is and less than 40 % of the asked pupils feel that they have had environmental education in school on some occasion. The results also show the difference between the two schools concerning environmental education and what they consider to be environment.
