Abstract This article explores and analyses narratives in social report-books in the context of structural rationalization during the 1960s and 1970s in Sweden, which entailed large movements of people both in Sweden and Finland (as it did in other countries of Western Europe). The characteristics of the report-books are that they claim to depict the truth and to give voices to marginalized people with the aim to contribute to social change. The analysis dwells not only on the content of the books, but also on the narrative techniques employed. It is discussed how the authors were tied to their political context and the general discourse of social critique in their rendering of voices. The main questions of this article are: whose voices were paid attention to and how was home narrated and represented? One kind of narrative content links home attachment to roots in a rural context, where home centres on reproduction of families, territorial claims and nature hugging. It is established through rhetoric of nature and timelessness, fathers passing inheritance on to their sons and a desire for a non-alienated existence in an archaic landscape. The narrative techniques used are based on an invisible narrator and on a travel narration with questions and answers. It is mainly male voices that are paid attention to. Female voices are to some extent heard but marginalized. Female bodily practices and habits are connected to positions as wives and daughters. The fisherman, the hunter, the woodlander and the farmer, are (re)presented as threatened male positions and therefore male bodies will in a near future be out of place. These narratives are framed by a patriarchal discourse where bodies are naturalized and made straight. Quite another kind of narrative content is forward-looking, dealing with voices in a suburban context. The montage as a narrative technique is systematically used there, combining text and image. The didactic montage is intended to be educational, to enlighten people with the aid of pointers. This calls for activity on the part of the reader/observer, who is supposed to be given the impression of having interpreted the meanings independently. It is based on consciousness-raising as a feminist method for change. This narrative of home is about societal participation and resenting and resisting patriarchal distinctions such as public/private. It is framed by a feminist discourse where bodies are denaturalized and orientated at finding space for the displaced body to expand.

Damian Finnegan (damian.finnegan@mah.se) Asko Kauppinen (asko.kauppinen@mah.se) Anna Wärnsby (anna.warnsby@mah.se) Academic Writing in a Multi-lingual and Multidisciplinary Context One crucial challenge of academic writing concerns the increasing heterogenisation of student populations. In many writing classes, we now find “any combination of native-born, international, refugee, permanent resident, and naturalized students,” exhibiting considerable linguistic diversity and multiple levels of English proficiency (Preto-Bay and Hansen, 2006; see also Hall, 2009). At the same time, interest towards academic writing in European higher education is growing, yet resources for teaching do not reflect this. Moreover, the wider student base demands practical application from their writing courses, not theoretical knowledge of language skills (see, for example, Anderson 1983, 2009 on procedural vs. declarative knowledge). To show how these problems can be addressed, we discuss the course Academic Writing in English offered at Malmö University, Sweden, which currently enrolls approximately 300 students per year. The course design is explicitly based on the general model of information processing, which assumes that “complex behavior builds on simple processes” (McLaughlin and Heredia, 1996, p. 213). The focus of all learning activities is on acquisition of procedural knowledge geared towards comprehension and production. One distinctive feature of this course is the very tight integration of electronic resources and other teaching material. This provides student populations various types of continuous feedback and highly individualised learning paths. In this paper, we present and evaluate empirical data pertaining to students’ experience of the content, structure and resources in this course. Clinical questionnaires and dental radiographic findings have both been suggested as methods of identifying women at risk of having osteoporosis and who might benefit from bone densitometry. The aim of this study was to measure the diagnostic accuracy of a combination of mandibular cortical width (MCW) measured from dental panoramic radiographs (DPRs) and the osteoporosis index of risk (OSIRIS) in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. 653 women (age range 45-70 years, mean age 54.95 years) in four European centres underwent standardised dual X-ray energy absorptiometry (DXA) to provide reference data on osteoporosis status. Each subject was interviewed to derive OSIRIS scores and underwent DPR examination. MCW was measured directly by five observers. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to calculate sensitivities and specificities of the clinical and radiographic tests for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. 512 (78.4%) of the study population were classified as having normal BMD and 141 (21.6%) as having osteoporosis. Using ROC analysis, OSIRIS gave a ROC curve area (A(z)) of 0.838, with a sensitivity of 70.9% and a specificity of 79.5% at a diagnostic threshold of <or=+1. MCW on DPRs gave Az values for the five observers ranging from 0.71 to 0.78, providing sensitivities between 41.0% and 59.6% and specificities of between 81.8% and 90.3% at a diagnostic threshold of a 3 mm MCW and sensitivities between 94.2% and 99.3% and specificities of between 9.8% and 23.7% at a diagnostic threshold of a 4.5 mm MCW. Inter-observer repeatability was less than 2.15 mm for 95% of subjects. Combining clinical and radiographic tests had the effect of improving specificity at the expense of a fall in sensitivity. Diagnostic thresholds for MCW and OSIRIS can be chosen to provide the sensitivity and specificity combination that best suits locally determined needs. However, the addition of OSIRIS as a stepwise 'follow-up' test to radiographic assessment of MCW should only be performed if the aim is to have a test for which the highest achievable specificity is desired.

The quality and resolution of solar, stellar, and other types of plasma observations, has so improved that the accuracy of atomic data is frequently a limiting factor in the interpretation of these new observations. An obvious need is for accurate transition probabilities. Laboratory measurements, e.g. using ion/traps, beam-foil or laser techniques, have been performed for isolated transitions and atoms, but no systematic laboratory study exists or is in progress. Instead the bulk of these atomic data must be calculated. Multiconﬁguration methods, either non-relativistic with Breit-Pauli corrections (MCHF+BP) or fully relativistic (MCDHF), are useful to this end. The main advantage of multiconﬁguration methods is that they are readily applicable to excited and openshell systems, including open f-shells, across the whole periodic table, thus allowing for mass production of atomic data. The accuracy of these calculations depends on the complexity of the shell structure and on the underlying model for describing electron correlation. By systematically increasing the number of basis functions in large-scale calculations, as well as exploring different models for electron correlation, it is often possible to provide both transition energies and transition probabilities with some error estimate. The success of the calculations also depends on available computer software. In this talk we will describe a collaborative effort to continue the important and acclaimed work of Prof. Charlotte Froese Fischer and to develop state-of-the-art multiconﬁguration codes. In the latest versions of the non-relativistic (ATSP2K) and relativistic (GRASP2K) multiconﬁguration codes angular integration is performed using second quantization in the coupled tensorial form, angular momentum theory in three spaces (orbital, spin and quasispin), and a generalized graphical technique that allows open f-shells. In addition it is possible to transform results given in the relativistic j j-coupling to the more useful LSJ-coupling. Biorthogonal transformation techniques are implemented and initial and ﬁnal states in a transition can be separately optimized. The main parts of the codes are also adapted for parallel execution using MPI. Results from recent large-scale calculations using these codes will be presented for systems of different complexity. Of special interest are spectrum calculations, where all states up to a certain level are computed at the same time. Finally, we look at new computational developments that allow basis functions in multiconﬁguration methods to be built on several independent and non-orthogonal sets of one-electron orbitals. Initial calculations indicate that the increased ﬂexibility of the orbital sets allows transition energies, as well as other atomic properties, to be predicted to a much higher accuracy than before.
