I den här artikeln beskrivs och diskuteras en empirisk studie där gymnasieelever diskuterar olika förklaringsmodeller kring ämnesområdet kropp och hälsa. Syftet har varit att utvärdera och analysera elevernas användning av begreppen tillförlitlighet och trovärdighet i förhåll-ande till såväl vetenskapliga som icke-vetenskapliga förklaringsmodeller. Vi har analyserat elevernas användning av olika epistemologiska resurser i argumentativa situationer. Analysen ledde fram till att eleverna använde fyra olika typer av epistemologiska resurser; relativistiska, normativa, auktoritativa och vetenskapliga. Resultaten visar att samma elev kan använda olika epistemologiska resurser vid olika tillfällen. Vi anser att vårt teoretiska ramverk som utgår från epistemologiska resurser kan bidra till att förstå hur individer använder olika förklaringsmodeller i olika sammanhang.

English abstract:

With the purpose of developing new methods in science education, the authors combine a socio-scientific issue and game-based technologies from augmented reality games into an intervention activity called Transformer. The authors design the intervention, collect and analyze data, and present results using the three elements from the theory of transformational play (Barab, Gresalfi & Ingram-Goble 2010) namely: engaging and stimulating roles, scientifically relevant content and complex and societally significant context. In Transformer, 20 upper-secondary students engage in a role-play concerning the project of building a school campus area close to a transformer station. The students explore the actual area using simulation-based mobile technologies to collect information through interviews with virtual characters, virtual measurements, and own observations. Collected information is synthesized into arguments concerning the appropriateness of building the campus area. The Transformer activity is based on SSI (socio-scientific issue), a pedagogical model aiming at developing students’ competences to make well-informed decisions through engaging them in complex societal issues. Data from the intervention are collected with multiple methods using questionnaires and interviews. The analysis illustrates expressions of immersive role play and active and engaged students who enjoy the opportunity of working in groups with a challenging task outside the class room. For some roles, however, there is room for improvement in the outdoor part of the intervention. We argue that this design perspective makes it feasible for a teacher or team of teachers to stage a multi-disciplinary engaging intervention that is constructively aligned with the students’ and teachers’ own practices and that addresses curricular goals.

Det klassiska ljusförsöket – att sätta ett glas över ett brinnande stearinljus i en skål med vatten – kan användas som en utmanande elevuppgift. Det är ett försök som fascinerat människor i flera tusen år. Den första kända rapporten om försöket gjordes av den grekiske ingenjören och naturforskaren Philo av Byzantium redan för 2200 år sedan. I undervisningssammanhang har det inte varit ovanligt att förklara den höjda vattennivån i glaset (ca. 1/5 av glasets volym) med att all syrgas i luften förbrukats. Redan år 1777 visade dock den franske kemisten Antoine Lavoisier att ovanstående effekter är näst intill försumbara i ett slutet system (volymen ändras mindre än 1%). Den främsta anledningen till att vatten sugs in i glaset är att systemet är öppet och att därmed dels luften ovanför ljuset redan är uppvärmd (termisk gasexpansion) när man sätter över glaset, dels att luft ofta har möjlighet att smita ut innan ljuset släcks. Vera, Rivera och Nunez (2011) beskrev nyligen ljusförsökets historia och också experiment där ljuset tändes i slutna system med hjälp av fokuserat ljus eller elektricitet. Det är möjligt för elever att – efter att själva ha utfört ljusförsöket, tänkt kritiskt, diskuterat möjliga förklaringar och utfört eventuella tilläggsexperiment – analysera dessa filminspelningar baserade på Lavoisiers experiment.

English abstract:

he empirical study, in this article, involved 42 students (ages 14–15), who used the urban simulation computer game SimCity 4 to create models of sustainable future cities. The aim was to explore in what ways the simulated “real” worlds provided by this game could be a potential facilitator for science learning contexts. The topic investigated is in what way interactions in this gaming environment, and reflections about these interactions, can form a context where the students deal with real world problems, and where they can contextualise and apply their scientific knowledge. Focus group interviews and video recordings were used to gather data on students’ reflections on their cities, and on sustainable development. The findings indicate that SimCity 4 actually contributes to creating meaningful educational situations in science classrooms, and that computer games can constitute an important artefact that may facilitate contextualisation and make students’ use of science concepts and theories more explicit.

Towards bildung-oriented chemistry education

English abstract:

This paper concerns Bildung-oriented chemistry education, based on a reflective and critical discourse of chemistry. It is contrasted with the dominant type of chemistry education, based on the mainstream discourse of chemistry. Bildung-oriented chemistry education includes not only content knowledge in chemistry, but also knowledge about chemistry, both about the nature of chemistry and about its role in society. In 2004 Mahaffy suggested a tetrahedron model based on Johnstone’s chemical triangle. The latter represents the formal aspects of chemistry teaching (macro, submicro, and symbolic) and the top of the tetrahedron represents a human element. In the present paper the following subdivision of the top is suggested (starting from the bottom): (1) applied chemistry, (2) socio-cultural context, and (3) critical-philosophic approach. The professional identity of the Bildung-oriented chemistry teacher differs from that of the chemist and is informed by research fields such as Philosophy of Chemistry, Science and Technology Studies, and Environmental Education. He/she takes a socio-critical approach to chemistry, emphasising both the benefits and risks of chemistry and its applications.
