Literature on Special Educational Needs in Mathematics: A bibliograph...

English abstract:

This documentation presents the findings of a survey of about 5,000 documents on low achievement in mathematics that have been published in one form or another during a long time, actually since 1886 and up to the new millennium. All these terms are defined as related to one and the same notion, namely low achievement in mathematics. For such low achievement some authors have used the term disability. Neurologists often prefer words beginning with the prefix "a" or "dys", such as "acalculia" or "dyscalculia", thus referring to simple arithmetic only. For ordinary educational purposes the author prefers less defect orientated expressions, as special educational needs in mathematics. Is the low achievement observed together with physical impairment of the individual, wrong learning strategies, unwise teaching, social circumstances etc.? Mathematics learning has been subjected to many conflicting impulses, not always favourable. The survey indicates a bias in the investigations. As to mathematical topics, simple arithmetic operations seem to have been most attractive to research. From a didactical view, the major part of the studies concerns extremely primitive learning conditions. Neurologists have often preferred to study simple neural deviations and sensori-motor processes connected with arithmetic. Future studies ought to go in for factor interplay between logical stuctures of mathematics, productive thinking of the student and social network of the environment, that is the factor-interplay model.

Utvärderingen syftar huvudsakligen till att undersöka vilka effekter projektet "Unga spekulerar" har på deltagarna; elever, skola och de som driver projektet. Utvärderingen kommer att genomföras kontinuerligt under projekttiden och rapporteras i två delrapporter och en slutrapport. Varje rapport kommer att ha ett huvudfokus för att skapa bästa möjliga djup i utvärderingen. Denna rapport utgör del två i en kontinuerlig utvärdering av projektet.

English abstract:

Does the teaching of Geography promote an understanding of the concept Sustainable Development? This was the most important question underlying the Swedish National Evaluation of Geography in 2003. In Sweden there has been a shift from an environmental education, previously taken care of by Science, to an education focusing on Sustainable Development where issues of Social Science, such as democracy and moral/ethical questions, are of great importance. The syllabus of Geography (2000) emphasises the teaching of Sustainable Development. The evaluation is based on data from questionnaires answered by pupils attending year 9 (the last year of compulsory school), teachers, parents and principals, as well as data from a test in Geography done by 1800 of the pupils. The test consisted of some traditional questions in Geography, but most of the questions concerned Sustainable Development. We find that the pupils performed well when answering the traditional, onedimensional questions about names and figures. Tankesmedjorna smider planer för framtiden

Swedish abstract:

Organisationen kring tankesmedjorna är ett samarbete mellan 27 kommuner i södra Sverige, kommunförbundet, Malmö Högskola och Högskolan Kristianstad. Ett skolrelaterat problemområde identifieras i samråd mellan intresserade kommuner och högskolorna. Alla initierade kommuner erbjuds möjlighet att delta i arbetet i smedjan och de som beslutar sig för att delta ingår därefter ett avtal med högskolorna angående tankesmedjans syfte, arbetsformer, mål och finansiering. Detta innebär att kommunerna står för merparten av finansieringen av tankesmedjans kostnader. När detta är klart bildas en tankesmedja för att bearbeta problemet, föreslå strategier för fortsatt forskning och hitta lösningsförslag användbara för den lokala skolan. En tankesmedja består av forskare och lärare från högskolan, yrkesverksamma från skolan med stor erfarenhet av det aktuella problemet samt andra kloka personer valda från verksamheter utanför skolområdet (ca 20 personer). Tankesmedjan arbetar ungefär ett års tid i en omfattning motsvarande en tiondel av deltagarnas totala arbetstid. Varje tankesmedja har två offentliga seminarier där allmänheten, lärare från högskolorna och de lokala skolorna inbjuds att delta. Arbetet i en tankesmedja avslutas genom att deltagarna författar en rapport i en skriftserie som finns tillgänglig för alla intresserade. Organisationen kring tankesmedjorna har nu varit igång i ungefär två år och de tankesmedjor som hittills startas är: -IUP, bedöming och betygsättning - Hälsa & lärande i samverkan - Kunskapssyn och kompetensbehov i framtidens samhälle - Matematik – En demokratisk rättighet

Swedish abstract:

Projektet Barn ser på framtiden har pågått sedan hösten 2001 och är framförallt ett nationellt skolprojekt som syftar till att stimulera elever i skolår 4-6 att fundera över framtidens teknik. Projektet drivs av Ingenjörsvetenskapsakademin (IVA) och Vetenskapsrådet (VR) och leds av en styrgrupp med representanter från näringslivet, forskningssamhället och skolan. Tanken med projektet är att eleverna skall reflektera över hur vi människor kommer bo, äta och transportera oss på ett miljömässigt och hållbart sätt år 2020. Den övergripande målsättningen med projektet är att stimulera elevernas intresse för teknik och naturvetenskap, försöka påverka lärarna att utveckla sin undervisning och integrera teknikämnet med andra ämnesområden. En annan målsättning är att eleverna under arbetet skall utveckla en medvetenhet om teknikens kunskapstraditioner och hur tekniken påverkat och påverkar människan, samhället och naturen.

Vocational Mathematics is an analysis and development project about numbers and vocational mathematics in work and in Adult Vocational training. We have posed three main questions in this project: • What skills and understandings in calculation and mathematics are needed in the semi-skilled jobs compared with the requirements in the AVT-teaching? • What are the difficulties in numbers and mathematics that the AVT-students encounter, why do the problems arise, and what are the implications for those returning to vocational education. • How can the mathematics-containing AVT-teaching be arranged such that it supports the students and provides them with opportunities to exploit their potentials?

The project is operated by The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) and the National Swedish Research Council and is lead by a board consisting of representatives from the industry, research community and schools.

Swedish abstract:

Syftet med arbetet är att se inom vilka områden/moment i matematikundervisningen för skolår 1 och 2 som det är möjligt att arbeta med kroppen som ett laborativt redskap och vad vinner vi med att arbeta med hela kroppen. Arbetet ger exempel på tidigare forskning inom området inlärning genom fysisk aktivitet och visar på samband mellan fysisk aktivitet och skolprestationer i matematik och svenska. Med hjälp av intervjuer av de delaktiga grundskollärarna i projektet fann jag fem-ton moment/områden i matematikundervisningen, där det är möjligt att arbeta med hela kroppen som ett laborativt redskap. Vinsterna med detta arbetssätt är enligt de intervjuade lärarna, att eleverna upplever matematiken som rolig och övningarna som lustfyllda, eleverna får flera annorlunda övningstillfällen, läsför-ståelse och ordkunskap övas, elever som har svårt att sitta koncentrerade en längre tid får möjlighet till pedagogiska avbrott med matematik integrerat med rörelse. Nyckelord: Fysisk aktivitet, individanpassat, konkret matematik, laborativt red-skap, positiva skolprestationer, ämnesövergripande.

English abstract:

Time-series of vegetation index derived from satellite spectral measurements can be used to gain information on seasonal vegetation development. This information aids analyzes of the functional and structural characteristics of the global and regional land cover and adds to our current knowledge of global cycles of energy and matter. Long time-series of vegetation index data can also provide information on shifts in the spatial distribution of bio-climatic zones, indicating variations in large-scale circulation patterns or land-use changes. Although the value of remotely sensed time-series data for monitoring vegetation seasons has been firmly established, only a limited number of methods for exploring and extracting seasonality parameters from such data series exists. For this reason the TIMESAT program package for extracting seasonal parameters has been developed. The program uses an adaptive Savitzky-Golay filtering method and newly developed methods based on upper envelope weighted fits to asymmetric Gaussian and double logistic model functions (Jönsson and Eklundh, 2002, 2003, 2004). From the fitted model functions a number of phenological parameters, e.g. beginning and end of the growing season, can be extracted. The TIMESAT program is tested with the 8 km by 8 km pixel resolution Pathfinder AVHRR Land (PAL) data set generated by NASA/NOAA and the 250 m by 250 m pixel resolution Terra/MODIS data. Being a completely general program TIMESAT can handle also other types of data such as meteorological index and fire data (Verbesselt et al, 2006).

This report deals with the development of policies for the Swedish school for all. The presentation gives examples of how, in an increasingly complex society, the views on why, for whom and how education is important changes. The starting point is the development of the Folk school, which despite of its designation, in the early days was a school for the few and on conditions which were, to say the least, unequal, and led to the struggle for an inclusion of all groups in the educational system.

English abstract:	The aim of the project is to use assessment in developing students’ professional competence during their courses of studies for qualification as social workers, teachers and den-tists in a culturally heterogeneous society. The difficulty of uniting theory and practice into a cohesive whole is worked upon by the use of simulated authentic situations. The students describe professional scenarios. They are used in self-assessment, seminars and interactive assessment. The situations are characterised partly by specific theoretical knowledge and partly by the obscure. In practice, the students describe, analyse and act, compare their own handling of the situation with others’ and articulate their need to further develop their competence. Everything is documented at the learning management system Xpand and easy to search through.
Swedish abstract:	Projektets syfte är att använda bedömning för att utveckla studenternas professionella kompetens i socionom-, lärar- och tandläkarutbildning. Svårigheten att i utbildningarna förena teori och praktik till en helhet bearbetas genom användningen av simulerade autentiska situationer. Studenterna beskriver professionella händelser. De används vid självbedömning, seminarier och examination. Situationerna är dels starkt laddade med specifik teoretisk kunskap och dels mer otydliga. Studenterna beskriver praktiksituationer, analyserar och handlar, jämför sin egen hantering av en situation med andras och artikulerar sitt behov av kompetensutveckling. Allt dokumenteras på nätplattformen Xpand och är lätt att söka.

EPASI in Europe (Charting Educational Policies to Address Social Inequalities in Europe) evaluated educational policies designed to counter disadvantage and inequality in Europe. We analysed policies in fourteen European countries, and report on policies designed to address disadvantage in particular groups. We give an overview of current policy and practice in Europe. We have based our analyses on projects in fourteen European countries: Belgium; the Czech Republic: Cyprus; Denmark; France; Greece; Ireland; Luxembourg; Malta; the Netherlands; Slovakia; Spain; Sweden and the United Kingdom. The work was carried out between January 2007 and February 2009.

English abstract:

This report examines the ways in which socioeconomic (SE) factors affect educational disadvantage. As a starting-point SE could be understood as a set of structural factors that influence education and could cause disadvantages for groups of children, youths and adults. Since socioeconomic disadvantage (SED) is a very complex concept, we will present a more extensive working definition. Official perceptions of SED as well as research perspectives will be discussed. SED has intersectional dimensions and these are explored here and in the other thematic reports1. There are several different factors used to measure socioeconomic conditions. Common ways of assessing SED can include parents’ educational level, social background, living conditions and social heritage. In Eurostat, parents’ educational level, living conditions, and income are measured together with other variables such as gender and ethnic group, in a multi-dimensional structure, in order to compile a comprehensive definition of SE. Although socioeconomic circumstances have an important effect on young people’s school careers, the concept of SE is not formally and uniformly defined in relation to education in EU reports and statistics.
