Hubs of Modernism - Paris, Berlin and Zürich 1880-1916

English abstract:	The development of European modernism in literature and art is, according to my hypothesis, the result of actual, physical, encounters in space and time. Such encounters formed a number of creative think tanks, which can be pinpointed to specific places and people at a certain time. The hubs, places of proximity or springboards, originally a concept from the field of human and economic geography, I will concentrate on are Berlin, Zürich and Paris. These three cities have shown an almost magnetic appeal to artists and writers over time, in contrast to otherwise comparable places like London or New York. What is specific to the hubs mentioned above is that the people involved withdrew from their individual nationality or background culture in order to pursue an experimental and borderless ‘society of arts’. By using Pierre Bourdieu’s thoughts on symbolic fields, and Torsten Hägerstrand’s concept of time geography, it will be possible to trace and encircle a specific European modernism, where common ideals related to ideas and methods take precedence over nationality, national culture and language.
Swedish abstract:	Utvecklingen av den europeiska modernismen i litteratur och konst är, enligt min hypotes, resultatet av faktiska, fysiska möten i tid och rum. Sådana möten gav upphov till ett antal kreativa tankesmedjor, som också kan knytas till specifika platser och människor vid en viss tidpunkt. De nav, kluster eller språngbrädor, ursprungligen ett begrepp hämtat från kulturgeografin, jag koncentrerar mig på är Berlin, Zürich och Paris. Dessa tre städer har visat sig ha en närmast magnetisk dragningskraft på konstnärer och författare över tid, i motsats till i övrigt jämförbara platser som London eller New York. Specifikt för de platser som nämns ovan är att de inblandade aktörerna drog sig tillbaka från sina individuella medborgarskap eller bakgrundskultur för att driva en experimentell och gränslös "Society of Arts". Genom att använda Pierre Bourdieus tankar om symboliska fält och Torsten Hägerstrands begrepp 'tidsgeografi', kommer det att vara möjligt att spåra och ringa in en särskild europeisk modernism, där gemensamma ideal som rör idéer och metoder har företräde framför nationalitet, nationella kulturer och språk.
