Inflammatory effects of very low-density lipoprotein and fatty acids.

English abstract:

High plasma triacylglycerol (triglyceride, TG) levels is a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Very large lipoproteins, such as chylomicrons, alone are not considered atherogenic, but TG-rich remnant lipoproteins can penetrate into the vascular wall. Importantly, accumulating evidence suggests that all TG-rich lipoproteins stimulate cytokine expression in circulating monocytes. Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) stimulates monocyte adhesion to endothelial cells and expression of inflammatory genes in macrophages. Furthermore, fatty acids released from large lipoproteins can stimulate both vascular cells and circulating monocytes. It is likely that fatty acids released from TG-rich lipoproteins contribute to atherogenesis, but the role of fatty acids in ischemic heart disease is not as direct as that of cholesterol. Fatty acids influence plasma lipoprotein levels and either stimulate or suppress numerous cellular functions relevant to atherogenesis. While certain n-3 fatty acids are good for health, most other medium- to long-chain fatty acids appear to promote inflammation in cell culture studies and need to be studied further. Nevertheless, the existing evidence supports the general conclusion that TG-rich lipoproteins and fatty acids greatly accelerate the progression of atherosclerosis. This may be because of their inflammatory effects.

Their narratives of loneliness, faltering nhealth and urging for integration in Swedish society, reflect and image that contrast the common generalizing assumptions of elderly migrants as passive bearers of cultural characteristics

I studien fokuseras ett antal kvinnor som deltagit i verksamheten. I deras berättelser om ensamhet, bristande hälsa som leder till en längtan efter en integration i det svenska samhället får vi enbild som går tvärtemot en rad generella antaganden om äldre invandrare som passiva förvaltare av kulturella särdrag

English abstract:

This article considers competing conceptions of knowledge within Swedish social work education often presented as incompatibles. However, in this article we find commonalities and differences in these conceptions of knowledge. The analysis relies on written materials about Swedish social work education and concentrates on three developmental phases in time: the establishment of the first social worker programme, the establishment of social work as an academic discipline and the current situation. It shows how competing conceptions of knowledge try to respond to societal and academic demands in different ways.

Online Sex Shops: Purchasing Sexual Merchandise on the Internet

English abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of those who purchase sexual merchandise on the Internet, what merchandise they purchase, and the reason they use the Internet for this purpose. Data were collected through a Web questionnaire. Approximately 30% of the 1,614 respondents who reported to use the Internet for sexual purposes had purchased sexual merchandise online. The results suggested those who purchased sexual merchandise were older adults and in relationships. In addition, they had a relatively high level of sexual activity. Vibrators/dildos were the most popular items, and the primary reason given for making the purchase online was convenience.

English abstract:

The content and prevalence of problematic Internet sexual use was investigated in a sample of 1,913 Internet-recruited younger Swedish men and women. Five items as part of a larger Internet sexual use study addressed problems associated with it, control, dysphoria, feeling “addicted,” and feeling the need for treatment. The resulting scale of Internet sexual problems indicated that 5% of women and 13% of men reported some problems, with 2% of women and 5% of men indicating serious problems across the five items. Of five predictors of problematic use, three were significant: religiosity, having negative experiences with Internet sexual use, and frequency of pornography viewing. The viewing and sharing of pornography was most closely associated with reported problems. Data also suggested that having some very specific pornographic content interests were associated with an increase in reported problems. While these data were limited by the non-random nature of the sample, they suggest that Internet sexual problems are measurable, are a subset of Internet addiction with sexual content, and affect a small but significant proportion of the Internet-using population.
