| English abstract: | The purpose of this study is to examine escort-business with a focus on sales of BDSM-services (Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadism and Masochism). The study is based on qualitative interviews with three informants providing BDSM-services, as well as a survey with 96 men who requested domination of escorts (the survey was carried out by an escort in the 1980s). The analysis of this material resulted in the identification of three themes on which the study centers: The personal experiences of the three escorts, the interaction between the escorts and the clients, and the changes over time when it comes to the performance of BDSM-services. The study has a gender perspective with a focus on feminism and queer-theory. The important conclusions are that there are several differences between prostitution having a focus on BDSM-services and other prostitution. Sexual intercourse is not a common occurrence. Role-playing games involving domination and submission, physical pain, humiliation and fantasies are instead central elements. Due to the security risks submissive services have been assumed not to exist in prostitution. In this study, however, two of the informants present themselves as submissive. Nothing in the empirical material suggests a greater security risk for escorts providing BDSM-services than other sexsellers. Instead, the escorts themselves characterize the phenomenon by straightforwardness, upright communication, and pre-agreed rules of the interaction. |

| English abstract: | Lövdén Brefelt, S. Parenting and sexuality. A study of parents' experiences of common sexual life. Master in sexology 30 credits. Malmö University: Health and Society, 2012. This is a qualitative descriptive study designed to examine parents' experiences of common sexual life and their view of how sexuality is portrayed in the public domain. Empirical research is based on semi-structured interviews with eight women and three men who live with a partner and children aged 4-16 years. The analysis is based primarily on the theoretical concepts of sexual scripts (Simon & Gagnon, 1999), reflexivity (Giddens, 1992) and individualization (Beck & Beck-Gernsheim, 1990; 1998). The results show that the respondents are struggling with the individualistic society's demands on reflexivity and the ideals of creating a good enough sexuality. This is both a freedom and an obligation, with uncertainty about the rapid changes and sexualization in the media. The respondents express a gender aspect; the man is the one who is seen as the most sexual. Individualization in society requires planning of everyday life and it is sometimes difficult to see sexuality as the everyday action one wishes. Planning for sex or catching spontaneous opportunities are two different strategies. Communication and problem-solving skills are important for the respondents who all live in relationships that have lasted long. Nevertheless, there is a fear of infidelity and separation. There is an awareness of the fact that today it is not obvious that a relationship lasts, but you have to work with it and here sexuality is important. There is also ambivalence between routinely everyday life and modernity that requires reflection and change. Keywords: individualization, intimacy, parents, reflexivity, relationships, sexuality, sexual script |
| Swedish abstract: | Lövdén Brefelt, S. Föräldraskap och sexualitet. En studie av föräldrars upplevelser av det gemensamma sexuallivet. Examensarbete i sexologi 30 hp. Nyckelord: föräldrar, individualisering, intimitet, reflexivitet, relationer, sexualitet, sexuella skript |

| English abstract: | Magnusson, A. ”…it’s a matter of great importance actually”. Coping strategies to sexual consequences due to cancer treatment. Expectations on sexuality and rehabilitation. Malmö University: Faculty of Health and Society, 2009. Abstract Background: An increasing number of people in Sweden are living with the experience of either having or having had cancer. Earlier research describes extensive sexual dysfunction and a lack of aid and information to cancer patients and their partners. Aim and method: The aim with this study is to explore how sexuality is affected by cancer treatment and to elucidate if specific strategies are developed by patients to manage sexuality and how medical service can give support and help. Two focus group discussions and five interviews was accomplished with ten informants during March and April 2009 Results: All ten informants have had sexual changes as a result of cancer treatment. Sexuality had been given new expressions regarding to individual limitations. Not everybody had remaining problems but information and rehabilitation was described as insufficient or none existing. The informants had several unanswered questions but also suggestions how to improve rehabilitation. Analysis and conclusion: The construction of sexuality in cancer disease is complex. On one hand sexual changes like impotence or pain is a reminder about existence and death. On the other hand an increased feeling of intimacy was depicted and also a higher capability of mindfulness was reported during sex. A variety of different coping strategies was used to reach meaningfulness and new constructions were made concerning sexuality whereupon the experience of quality of life was changed. |

| English abstract: | The purpose of this study is to hightlight experiences of living in a relationship where BDSM is being exercised. The acronym is an umbrella term for bondage/discipline, dominance/submission and sadomasochism. The study is based on qualitative interviews with five persons who define themselves as BDSM practitioners. The overall questions of this study are: How does the BDSM practice appear in everyday life? How did the practice start and how has it developed over time? What's included in the sexual BDSM practice? The empirical material has been analyzed with interactionism as the theoritical framework. The picture that emerges is complex. To define oneself as a BDSM practitioner might mean different things for different people where the extent of the practice, what it consists of and how intergrated it is in the lives of people might vary from person to person. But despite differences there are also recurring, common patterns in the stories of the informants. All of them describe the practice in positive terms. To a great extent the practice has to do with sexuality where an explicit power exchange, an assuming of dominant and submissive roles and an everyday life filled with rituals, rules and agreements are described as being key elements. Punishment, in the form of physical pain or humiliation, is common when the rules are not obeyed. All the interviewees use safe words to make sure both are comfortable about what's happening. Some sort of tool is utilized by all. The most common are whips, bonds, chains and locks, paddles, clamps/clothespins, knives, butt plugs and ropes. There's an occupation among the informants to find and to form strategies to cope and to adapt the BDSM role to other roles and here the parental role is the most apparent. Also an ambition to create a balance between the personal norms and the norms of the BDSM culture and those of the overall society can be seen. The interviewees express a search for answers to why one practices BDSM. In this process they return to experiences, almost exclusively of a destructive nature, and they wonder if these experiences have affected their sexuality and their preference for BDSM. It is like this even if the common attitude in society actually has become more accepting, for example with the help of media, recent research and the fact that it is not anymore is considered being a disorder. |
