Title "U Profesia Chilam Balam T ix kayom Cabal Chen Mani" : Maya Prophecies and Cycles of Time, Place and Ritual
Author(s) Liljefors Persson, Bodil
Date 2012
English abstract
Especially this year, 2012, Maya Prophecies is a much discussed subject. How can we understand Maya prophecies on the basis of the sources we have at our disposal? It is the aim of this paper to explore different Maya (Con-)Texts in order to understand the meaning of the prophecies, but also to grasp how certain places are linked to certain prophecies and how this also creates cycles of rituals as important in Maya cosmovision. A (con-)textual approach and a critical close reading of Yucatec Maya Texts and other historically important texts, will be employed in order to explore underlying and intricate patterns of cosmology, mythology and rituals important in Maya worldview. How does rituals and prophecies connect to certain places and how are they anchored in space and time? Especially mythological and ritual motifs and elements, and symbolic-rhetorical speech will be in focus for this study. Processes of change and patterns of continuity in these (con-)texts will also be discussed in this paper that strives at highlighting these questions from Yucatec Maya Perspective.
