Homelessness in Sweden is increasing and the problem is mostly confined to the big city regions. In Malmoe the most common work model for counteracting homelessness is the so called staircase model, which step by step trains homeless people to be housing ready. Homeless people is placed in and moved about amongst different short sighted housing solutions with the conditions of for example sobriety or participation in treatment. A new initiative in the work against homelessness is however being introduced in the city, a model that goes by the name Housing first. According to this model, homeless people with psychosocial problems is offered a permanent housing solution without any conditions of sobriety or participation in treatment. I this study, the social workers views on the different models are presented, as well as the up and downsides these have on the workers work situations. The results show that the social workers work situations are substantially different. A summarizing conclusion is however that the social workers are unanimous in the belief that one method does not have to rule out another.
