English abstract
The purpose of our study was to examine how children in a municipal preschool in Sweden describe the relationships they have with their peers. Throughout the study, we have used a qualitative method with observations of children and conducting interviews with them. We then analyzed how they describe and act in their existing relationships. The aim of our study was to observe if the hierarchy and the indoor environment have an impact on children’s relationships. We did this through interviews with the children about their friendships amongst each other at the preschool. Our theoretical output was to observe and listen to the children through the participant perspective (Sommer, 2005) and the socio-cultural perspective (Säljö, 2000). During the study, we had a thesis that the perspectives would complement each other, which was supported by our results. The two perspectives complement each other depending on the participating individual and the situation. The interviews showed that the children are well aware of how they should act towards their peers, but the observations show that they will use the means necessary to achieve a higher position within the hierarchy. The result also showed that the relationships are not in a static mode, but are in constant movement and are affected by the group constellation and the location of the play.
