Title The Discourse of Chemistry (and Beyond)
Author(s) Sjöström, Jesper
Date 2007
English abstract
This paper problematises the mainstream discourse of chemistry and suggests a complementary discourse. On a disciplinary level, the discourse of chemistry is based on objectivism, rationalism, and molecular reductionism. On a societal level, the discourse is based on modernism. The aims of chemical research and education are often unclear, which nowadays often leads to an emphasis on the needs of industry. More meta-perspectives (philosophical, historical, and socio-cultural) within chemical research and education practice should – except giving chemical Bildung to the practitioners – also improve the image of chemistry, and in the long term create a more reflective and problematising discourse.
