Title När fiktion blir verklighet - Några lärare, lärarstudenter och elevers syn på faktionstexter i skolan
Author(s) Olsson, Hanna
Date 2008
English abstract
The main aim of this study was to look at teachers’, trainee teachers’ and students’ experiences as well as attitudes towards the role of faction literature in school. This was studied through semi structured interviews with four working primary school teachers, two trainee teachers, who had studied for at least two years, as well as through a group interview with five secondary school students. A questionnaire was used to choose participants and was also the basis for the following discussion. An inventory of school libraries and the Swedish department of the school, at which the teachers work, has also been carried out. The results showed that teachers and trainee teachers thought that the faction literature was interesting both in content and presentation, but that they were used too infrequently in class. Reasons given by teachers for this were that they did not feel confident in how to teach the literature, as well as often having unsettling subject matters such as abuse and violence, which further complicated the teaching process. Positive aspects, which appeared, were that faction literature had a high level of appeal and that the students easily identify with the characters at the same time as being engaged by the text. Students would happily read faction literature, preferably in their free time, as they believe as a rule that any literature, which was studied in school, was over analysed. Both teachers and students were however fascinated by the content and link to real life, which was offered by the text. The working teachers and students do not come from the same school, which has had an obvious impact on the results. However it has been indicated by the trainee teachers’ observations that teachers from two other schools have shared the same opinion as those who took part in the study. Teachers can and should utilise the positive aspects of faction texts in the classroom, in order to enrich the students’ range of reading as well as their views. Its specific narrative makes it accessible for use in source-based studies, whilst the fascinating content opens up the possibility to discuss both big and small questions about relationships and the society which we live in today. Key words: Faction literature, reality and fantasy, attitudes towards litterature, documentary novels, autobiographies.
Swedish abstract
The main aim of this study was to look at teachers’, trainee teachers’ and students’ experiences as well as attitudes towards the role of faction literature in school.
